Townsville Eisteddfod Inc. is incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation. Members pay a small subscription fee to join and they elect office-bearers to run the organisation. All members are unpaid volunteers, but Office-bearers who work for the Eisteddfod throughout the year may be paid a stipend.
An eisteddfod (plural eisteddfodau or eisteddfods) is a festival of performing arts, visual arts and literature. It is a Welsh tradition that dates back to at least the 12th century.
Townsville Eisteddfod is open to competitors up to the age of 18 years. It is held annually in September. In a typical year, more than 400 competitive events (called “Sections”) are held over 19 days. Altogether, these result in about 20,000 individual performances.
Adjudicators are selected for their qualifications and experience, and as far as possible, have no direct involvement with local competitors for at least 6 months before the Eisteddfod.
